99th ANNIVERSARY
CELEBRATION
|
|
| |
The
congregation of the Park Ridge United Methodist
Church at 130 Berthoud Street and Highview
Avenue, Park Ridge, will celebrate their
99th anniversary with a worship service
on Sunday, September 7 at 10:00 a.m.
To begin this exciting day, a breakfast
will be held welcoming back the Sunday School
classes at 9:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
All are invited to attend both breakfast,
register for Sunday School and attend the
service.
During the Anniversary Service, the names
of the twenty-five pastors who have served
the congregation will be read. The first
was Glenn E. Mangun on Sunday, September
12, 1909 who led the service at Leach’s
Chapel, now our Pascack Historical Society
Museum.
Other members will read the history
of the church written by Miss Marion L.
Briscoe. Ms. Briscoe was a daughter of one
of the founding families and a long time
Park Ridge resident. Following the reading,
Rev. George N. Frederick will be introduced
and formally welcomed as the new and the
twenty-sixth pastor.
All are invited to attend.

WORSHIP COMMITTEE |
Winter is finally a distant memory, and spring
is drawing to a close. Now the Worship Committee is
in the process of planning the services for July, August
and September.
Once again we will be worshiping in our Memorial Garden.
Please note we will hold the service inside in case
of inclement weather.
By now our Church members and Friends know that our
church is undergoing a change in pastorial leadership:
the Rev. Jun and Izumi have moved on to their new ministerial
assignment at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Bergenfield.
On Sunday, September 7 the Rev. George Frederick
will be our guest when the Church celebrates the 99th
Anniversary. Rev. Frederick will preach on Sunday September
14 for the first time.
The list of services and their leadership is posted
under the "Worship Services" section.
Hope to see you all in the garden.
Lillian Thomas

THE CHURCH AND MONEY...
There are really three kinds of
fundraising activities which churches use:
1. Regular giving: This is giving from envelopes,
pledges, offerings, etc. These funds normally
fund the regular expenses of operating the
church, such as salaries, committee expenses,
utilities, insurance, etc. This is our main
budgetary source of income.
2. Fundraisers: These are usually special
appeals for extraordinary projects such
as major repairs, new construction, debt
reduction, etc. These usually happen as
needed, in times of great need such as when
hurricanes and tsunamis hit.
3. Endowments: This is money that is given
through a will or bequest or by special
gift from a dear individual. The principal
which is given is not normally spent but
only the income is used to provide a perpetual
annual gift to the church. In addition,
income from endowments is not normally used
to supplement regular giving. Rather is
it used to take the place of items in the
“Fundraising” category, or other special
ministries. Memorials too, are often given
and can be designated for a special use.
As you may know, we previously became a
beneficiary of income from significant endowments.
This is a Godsend! We will receive an annual
gift of income, perpetually. This income
was not used for current expenses—but enabled
us to do many long-awaited and long-needed
repairs and improvements to our facility,
as well as fund special ministries/projects.
We are so grateful that members remembered
their church in this way, and continue to
support our church even beyond their death.
Have you thought of remembering
your church in your will? Often there are
wonderful tax advantages to certain trusts
or pre-arrangements. In addition, this is
a wonderful way to make a gift that will
go on giving, forever. |
